NorthEast Philadelphia High School Football Thanksgiving Day Games
For the past five years I have been shooting High School Football Thanksgiving Day games for several papers in the North East Philly area. I team up with another sports shooter and we divide and conquer to capture as many games throughout the area as possible. Some years I may have one, others, like this year, I may have several. This year I had three games to cover, George Washington High School vs Archbishop Ryan, Lincoln at Father Judge and Central at NorthEast.
The day started off at GWHS vs Archbishop Ryan, last year it was bitter cold, this year was a balmy 48 degrees to start the day. I was able to stay for the first two quarters before heading out to the next game. By the time I left, it was an incredible 58 degrees out, can’t remember when it was that warm for Thanksgiving in a couple of years at least and Ryan ended up winning 35-7.
Next up, Lincoln vs Father Judge, this was actually the first game I shot five years ago in the North East Philly area. I remember this game as it was a cold day and starting snowing, with what seemed like the largest flakes imaginable. I was only able to stay at this game for a short time since covering the first game and travel eats up time. So I caught the third quarter and the start of the fourth, Father Judge went on to win 35-14.
Finally, it was a rush to get to the last game of the day, Central vs NorthEast and no, Tony Danza didn’t come around for a reunion. I arrived and it was 20-18 at the start of the fourth quarter, luckily there was a long half time allowing time to get there from the Father Judge game. It quickly became a route and NorthEast won 48-20, but I was able to still get some good shots and enjoy, at this time, the 60+ degree weather.
